Sexual Wellness RI: Finding Confidence, Identity, and Healing

Sexual wellness wasn't something I expected to become passionate about, it’s woven into my story.

Some of my earliest memories of learning about sexuality didn't come from a classroom.

They came from the passenger seat of my mom's gray station wagon, singing at the top of my lungs to Salt-N-Pepa's "Let's Talk About Sex." I was twelve years old, blissfully unaware that those moments would help shape the therapist, advocate, and business owner I would one day become.

Today, as the founder of Life's A Journey Counseling, I understand that mental health and sexual wellness are deeply connected. Yet many people searching for sexual wellness in Rhode Island (RI) or Southeastern Massachusetts aren't simply looking for information about sex. They're looking for confidence, healing, self-acceptance, healthy relationships, and a place where they can finally feel safe being themselves.

Sex education looked very different in the 1990s. There was no TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, or Google to answer every question. Instead, we learned through music, conversations with cousins and babysitters, television, trusted adults, and our communities. While not every lesson was perfect, those experiences opened the door to curiosity instead of shame.

I was fortunate to grow up in a household that was both body-positive and sex-positive. My parents encouraged open conversations rather than secrecy. Looking back, I realize what a gift that was. It laid the foundation for believing that our bodies, identities, relationships, and sexuality deserve respect—not judgment.

As I grew older, I discovered Athena's Home Novelties, a woman-owned business built on education, empowerment, and helping women embrace their sexuality. I admired the company's mission long before conversations about sexual wellness became more mainstream. It wasn't simply about products—it was about confidence, education, and creating safe spaces for women to explore their bodies without shame.

That message stayed with me.

Growing up in Rhode Island, my family spent countless weekends taking road trips to visit relatives in New York. Those trips exposed me to different cultures, perspectives, lifestyles, and identities. I learned early that there isn't just one way to experience the world. Diversity wasn't something to fear, it was something to appreciate and learn from.

Every experience became another piece of the foundation that eventually led me to create Life's A Journey Counseling.

Today, our practice believes that mental health and sexual wellness are deeply connected. Healing isn't just about reducing anxiety or depression. It's about discovering who you are, understanding your values, building healthy relationships, and feeling comfortable in your own body.

For many people, conversations around sexuality have been filled with guilt, shame, confusion, trauma, or fear. Others have never had a safe place to ask questions or explore their identity. That is especially true for many members of the LGBTQIA+ community, individuals navigating gender identity, neurodivergent adults, trauma survivors, and those recovering from unhealthy relationships.

At Life's A Journey Counseling, we strive to provide an affirming, inclusive environment where every person can explore these parts of themselves safely and without judgment. Whether you're questioning your identity, rebuilding confidence after trauma, navigating intimacy concerns, healing from religious or cultural shame, or simply wanting a healthier relationship with yourself, you deserve compassionate support.

What Does Sexual Wellness Really Mean?

Many people think sexual wellness only refers to intimacy or physical health. In reality, sexual wellness encompasses so much more.

Sexual wellness includes:

  • Feeling comfortable in your own body

  • Understanding your values and boundaries

  • Developing healthy relationships

  • Exploring sexual orientation or gender identity

  • Recovering from sexual trauma

  • Healing from religious or cultural shame

  • Learning to communicate your needs

  • Building confidence and self-esteem

  • Feeling empowered to make decisions about your own body

At Life's A Journey Counseling, we believe sexual wellness is an important part of overall mental health. When one area suffers, the other often does too.

Female anatomy, bodily autonomy, empowerment, and self-expression hold a special place in both my personal journey and the mission of our practice. We believe your body belongs to you. Your identity belongs to you. Your story belongs to you.

Healing doesn't require you to hide parts of yourself.

Instead, healing often begins when you finally give yourself permission to be fully seen.

Our goal is not to tell you who you should be. Our goal is to help you discover who you've always been beneath the expectations, fear, shame, and labels placed upon you.

Because mental health isn't separate from sexuality, identity, relationships, or self-worth.

They're all connected.

As therapists, we have the privilege of walking alongside people as they rediscover confidence, authenticity, and joy. Watching someone move from self-doubt to self-acceptance is one of the greatest honors of this work.

So yes, maybe it all started with a twelve-year-old girl singing Salt-N-Pepa in her mom's station wagon.

But today, it continues every time someone walks through our doors ready to begin their own journey toward healing, self-discovery, and embracing every part of who they are.

At Life's A Journey Counseling, we believe you don't have to choose between healing and authenticity.

You deserve both.

Whether you're searching for sexual wellness in RI, exploring your identity, healing from trauma, rebuilding intimacy, or simply looking for an LGBTQIA+-affirming therapist who understands that every person's journey is unique, you deserve compassionate support.

At Life's A Journey Counseling, we proudly provide inclusive, affirming mental health care for adults, adolescents, couples, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts, both in person and through secure telehealth services.

Your story deserves to be heard.

Your identity deserves to be celebrated.
